    Before working at EWS, Caryn was a social studies educator with Houston ISD for 10 years and most recently taught United States History 1492-1867 and one section of World History AP at Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders. During that time, Caryn presented three times at the Austin Independent School District Personalized Learning Symposium and was involved with writing the social studies curriculum. Caryn matriculated at Beth Yeshuran Day School and The Emery/Weiner School before graduating from Bellaire High School. Caryn has been teaching for almost 17 years. While working with Houston Independent School District, she obtained her master's degree in Educational Leadership from St. Thomas University. In addition, she holds several Texas certifications in the Humanities. When Caryn isn't learning with her students, she enjoys running in Hermann Park, cooking, reading, drawing, and listening to records. Caryn is super excited to introduce her husband, eight-month-old, and 16-year-old stepdaughter to all of her favorite places in Houston!

    Cheryl joined EWS in 2004. She currently teaches Calculus and Pre-Calculus. In previous years, she has taught courses in Advanced Calculus, Statistics, Advanced Pre-Calculus, Honors Geometry, Geometry, and Algebra. Prior to joining the Emery/Weiner community, Cheryl taught both Advanced Placement and On-Level courses at a large, local public high school. Cheryl holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics and graduated with honors from The University of Texas at Austin. While at The University of Texas, she participated in the UTeach program and earned her secondary teaching certification in mathematics. Cheryl has received several honors, one being selected as a member of Who’s Who among America’s Teachers. In her spare time, Cheryl loves spending time with her children, as well as dancing and swimming.

    Renee joined EWS in 2024 as part of the Admissions team. Renee comes to Emery after years of dedicated service in HISD, both in Finance and as an Office Manager. In her free time, she enjoys music, self-improvement, and collecting angels.

    Ashley Matthews has been at EWS since 2023. She is a seasoned development professional with eighteen years of experience in private school advancement in Houston. Ashley has a strong background in special events, fundraising, alumni, and volunteer management. Throughout her career, Ashley has successfully led donor engagement initiatives, organized impactful events, and built strong relationships with parents and community stakeholders to support school missions.

    Ashley's passion for education and philanthropy drives her commitment to fostering meaningful connections and enhancing fundraising efforts. In her free time, Ashley enjoys spending time with family, jigsaw puzzles, all things Disney and working in her garden.

    Tom is a Pennsylvania native who has been with EWS since 2008. He began honing his skills working on the maintenance crew at a local paper mill for 17 years, and then working as the crew supervisor of his own paving business. Tom and his wife decided to move to Texas in 2006 to be closer to their family. He spends most of his time cheering on his grandchildren, the STEELERS, and the Astros! He prides himself on his work ethic and will go the extra mile to make Emery a safe and pleasant place… Stay CALM and call TOM!

    Otis has been with EWS since 2018. Before joining EWS, Otis worked for Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood, South Carolina as a Youth Fitness Instructor, managed a baseball/softball training facility in Easley, South Carolina, and taught Physical Education and Special Education at  schools in South Carolina and Texas. During that time Otis moved halfway across the country to Houston, Texas to pursue his dreams of living in a “big city.” Otis now makes positive impacts on students’ lives through Physical Education and Athletics, helping to make EWS better by providing a positive learning environment for students to grow physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually. Otis grew up on a peanut farm in Branchville, South Carolina.

    Stacy joined the EWS college counseling team in 2023. A Northwestern University graduate, she began her career as a journalist before earning a master’s in education from UT-Austin in 2000. She spent fourteen years coaching debate (including national champions) and was named Texas Speech Communication Association Teacher of the Year. She later worked in school administration before transitioning to counseling in 2019. Stacy's background in writing and debate coaching helps students craft compelling college applications. Outside of work, Stacy is passionate about dog rescue, jigsaw puzzles, and cheering on the Astros.

    Domonique Mckenzie grew up in Houston, Texas, in the Alief community. He attended a small community college in Alabama, initially pursuing a degree in audio production, media production, or broadcasting with aspirations of working in radio. 

    Domonique has been with Emery since 2024 and values the school's welcoming environment. In his free time, he enjoys biking, basketball, fishing, and gaming. He also loves spending time with his siblings, nieces, and nephews, as well as watching anime—especially Naruto. He is a fan of seafood, Mexican, and Cajun cuisine and enjoys trying new restaurants.

    Jessie has taught tenth and eleventh grade English since 2014. In 2021, she was awarded the Texas Exemplary teacher distinction. Jessie graduated from UCLA in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a concentration in creative writing. Jessie has worked as a wildlife biology field assistant throughout southern California, an environmental educator at the Ballona Wetlands, and a naturalist at the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. She currently teaches English II, Creative Writing, and Journalism at EWS. Jessie enjoys swimming, gardening, and spending time with her husband and two pugs.

    Tanya has been a member of the EWS teaching staff since 2016. She currently teaches Spanish III Honors and Advanced Spanish IV. Prior to teaching at Emery/Weiner, Tanya taught Spanish in Alvin ISD for thirteen years, including six years of middle school and seven years of high school, and dual-credit college classes at Manvel High School. At Manvel, she served as department chair as well as World Languages Curriculum Specialist for the Alvin district. Over the years she has taught Spanish I & II Pre-AP, Dual Credit Spanish I-IV, AP Spanish Language and Spanish for Healthcare Professionals. She has a Journalism BA and Spanish minor from Southwestern Adventist University and a Masters degree in the "Language and Culture of Spain and Spanish-Speaking Countries" from the University of Salamanca in Spain. Tanya believes that learning should be an enjoyable experience for both the teacher and the student. With mutual respect, the classroom can be a fun atmosphere because more than anything, she loves to laugh and encourage students. She learned German as a child to speak with her grandmother and learned Spanish when she moved to Venezuela at the age of eight. More than cheering for the Steelers, finding great restaurants, cooking and exploring cultures, she loves to spend time with her boys, Theodore, Oliver, and her husband Brian.

    Dave has been with EWS since the Fall of 2011. Dave took advantage of an early retirement from Continental Airlines after a 20 year career, spending most of that time as a Managing Director of Finance. After retiring from Continental in 2008, Dave served as the CFO for a local commercial real estate company and also worked for a year in the energy services industry. Since joining EWS Dave has worked to create a new financial aid process (eTAP) – and new and innovative way to help families on Financial Aid make an education at EWS affordable. The scope of responsibilities for Dave and his team include: Business Office (Finance/Accounting/Payroll/HR), Facilities/Security, Technology, Food Service and Nursing. Dave and his wife Shauna have two daughters that are both graduates of Emery.

    Susan joined Emery in August of 2021. She started her teaching career as an elementary teacher, with experience teaching second grade, third grade, and fifth grade. After completing two master’s degrees, one in school counseling and one school administration, Susan worked as a school counselor for nine years. During the past twenty-three years she has worked as an administrator at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

    At Emery, Susan has enjoyed working beside outstanding teachers and administration while embracing the private school difference. In her downtime Susan enjoys spending time outdoors walking or bike riding as well as spending time with her son.

    Paige has been with EWS since 2021. She arrived after a four-year tenure at Alvin High School where she taught painting, drawing, and art foundations. While there, she  was nominated for a Humanities Texas Outstanding Teacher Award and organized a student mural team — modeled after the one she served on at the Savannah College of Art and Design. After graduating, Paige worked as an editorial illustrator and freelancer, allowing her to travel the world. She spent three years as a travel writer and tour organizer in Athens, Greece. Since returning to Houston, she has led creativity workshops on mythology at the Jung Center, Houston, taught after-school art programs, and created murals in and around Houston before stepping into the classroom full-time. Outside of her role as the Upper School Art Teacher/Co-Department Chair at EWS, Paige maintains her own studio art practice and has participated locally in several group exhibitions. She also spends her time writing, battling mosquitos in her garden, and planning adventures near and far.

    Michael joined EWS in 2008. Currently he teaches eleventh and twelfth grade electives which include: Jewish Magic and Mysticism, Jewish Ethics, Modern Jewish Philosophy, Genesis, and Comparative Religion. This year he is also teaching a tenth grade honors class. Michael is a Boston area native who received his undergraduate degree with honors in religious studies from the University of Pennsylvania and his graduate degrees with distinction from the joint program between Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary. He taught Judaism and Comparative Religion at the University of Alberta and served as Hillel Director at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. After leaving Hillel, he became Dean of Jewish Studies at the Milwaukee Jewish Day School; receiving the Milwaukee Association of Jewish Education’s Teacher of the Year award in 1993. While living in Milwaukee he also served part time as Rabbi of Congregation Emanu-El of Waukesha, and during the summers was the Judaism specialist at BBYO’s Chapter Leadership Training Conference in Mukwonago WI. Before coming to Houston, Michael taught 8 years at Gann Academy in Waltham MA where he taught Tanakh and Topics in Jewish Thought as well as serving as a class dean. He also taught at Hebrew College’s Prozdor supplemental high school program and founded its Masoret classes for exceptional students. Michael has taught all areas of Judaism and Comparative Religion. He is the Translator of an ancient Jewish magic text—Sepher Ha-Razim-The Book of the Mysteries, published by the Society of Biblical Literature. In his spare time he is a student of Science Fiction and Fantasy who is trying to figure out how to remain a Red Sox and Packers fan while living in Houston.

    Matthew joined the Emery/Weiner School team in the Fall of 2023. Prior to Matthew’s time at Emery, he worked as a freelance designer in the Houston area since he moved to the city in 2019. Although he was trained in design for theatre, he also has experience in dance, live music, and corporate events. Previously, Matthew also worked at Queensbury Theater and St. Agnes Academy as a Technical Director.

    Matthew loves working in education and teaching students about stagecraft and design. In his free time, Matthew enjoys going on walks with his dog, going to see live music, trivia nights with his friends, and spending time with his family.
