Joe’s career as an educator began in 2005 as a fine arts teacher and department chair at an international school in Istanbul, Turkey, where he taught for seven years. Upon returning to the United States, he taught at a public magnet school for international studies in Houston’s Independent School District. During this time, Joe was recognized by the district for excellence in AP teaching and asked to help write AP curriculum for other teachers. In 2014, Joe joined the EWS team where he taught history and co-taught Zionism with the Head of School. Joe was later asked to serve as Director of Jewish Life from 2017 to 2020, where he oversaw religious celebrations, interfaith work, community partnerships, and a student ambassador program with a sister-school in Israel. In the summer of 2020, Joe was named Head of Upper School. Joe is grateful for this opportunity to serve the EWS community and considers himself extremely lucky to work with such a talented and devoted team of educators.
As an active member of the EWS faculty, Joe has sponsored a variety of student clubs and activities over the years, including astronomy, chess, Model United Nations, an annual Catholic-Jewish Youth Summit, Building Bridges (an interfaith partnership between Jewish and Muslim students), and student political engagement through AIPAC. Joe is a life-long learner and aspiring scholar-practitioner. In the summer of 2022, he earned a doctorate in education from the Johns Hopkins University’s School of Education. The focus of his research was experiential learning and entrepreneurial leadership in education. Joe’s relationship with Hopkins has continued since then as a part-time adjunct professor in the online Doctor of Education program.
Joe and his wife, Alyssa, have two children (both students at EWS) and relish being outdoors, traveling, and spending time in the company of good friends.
