Through Health and Wellness is a semester long elective course that will empower students to live a healthy lifestyle. Students will learn about many aspects of physical and mental health, including social and emotional wellness, healthy eating, physical fitness, substance abuse, disease prevention, healthy relationships, sexual health, injury and violence prevention. By the end of the semester, students will be equipped to make good decisions for healthy living.
This course concentrates on developing strength through weight and resistance training with additional emphasis on cardio fitness, speed, power, core, flexibility, plyometrics, agility training and more.
Length of Course: 1 semester (can be taken more than one semester)
Prerequisite: None
Course Description:
Yoga is about finding connection between the mind, body, and soul. In this class, we will focus on both internal and external exercises. We will explore stress management through structured breathing, stretching, and meditation exercises. We will primarily practice Vinyasa style yoga in which we’ll work on linking our breath with our movements as we both strengthen and lengthen the body. There will also be some Gentle Flow days in which movements and breathing are slower with the goal of further calming the mind. The process of yoga is inherently a process of transformation, and this class will ask that you take the time to allow for deeper insights as to who you are and how your body functions.
Prerequisite: Upper School Registrar must approve Off-Campus Athletics before credit can be given
Course Description:
Because a number of Emery/Weiner students compete on a state-wide or national level, they are involved in year-round practice. As a result, the following is the policy for obtaining physical education credit in the upper school.
A student desiring to obtain physical education credit for an activity outside of the Emery/Weiner School program should make his/her request in writing to the Upper School Athletic Director. Credit may not be earned retroactively. Decisions are based on the following:
Extensive commitment of the student to the sport/activity (multi-year training history)
Sustained commitment in the sport/activity (year-round involvement; more than seasonal involvement)
Minimum time-commitment (at least 1.5-2 hours daily, in addition to customary, significant weekend time commitments)
Evidence of extraordinary achievement in the activity
Must have a coach and meet with that coach on a regular basis
Must participate on the school team in season if that sport is offered by Emery/Weiner
Coach must be willing to submit a written report on the student-athlete’s status
The decision to grant credit will be made by the Upper School Registrar and the Upper School Athletic Director.
Prerequisite: Teams are formed at the beginning of each season
Course Description:
Competitive interscholastic sports offer practices and athletic events after the regular school day. The athlete must be willing to dedicate commitment, time and effort to ensure a successful program. Periodic grade checks are done to ensure the academic progress of the student. A student who participates on an interscholastic team receives credit for physical education for that one season. A student must complete 100% of the sport season to receive credit for Physical Education. This course will be added to the student’s credits once the season is completed.

Angie has been with EWS since 2006. Before joining EWS, Angie worked as an educator, coach and a consultant. As a Spanish teacher and coach, her dedication to helping students and commitment to excellence in the classroom earned her a Rookie Teacher of the Year Award at a Houston area high school. Shortly after 9/11, she joined a global outreach organization and moved overseas to mentor youth in military communities. After her time there, she spent three years as a consultant for a big 5 consulting firm, working on projects in the products, government, and oil and gas industries. There she managed timelines, implemented new programs, and ensured easy transitions for her clients. In her first three years at Emery, Angie taught physical education, health and coached middle school volleyball, varsity soccer and varsity softball. She started as the athletic director in 2009, and she continues to coach volleyball in the middle school. As they would say in Aggieland, she bleeds maroon. Though, even the Aggies could not pull her away from supporting the Emery Jaguars on the sports fields and courts. When she’s not supporting Emery coaches and student-athletes, she loves spending time with her husband and two children, visiting family, and hanging out with friends.

Ashley joined EWS in 2008. She has taught everything from Spanish I - IV; on-level and honors. In 2016, she left Emery for a while to pursue her passion for health and wellness full-time and worked for Rice University as a Fitness & Wellness coordinator, yoga teacher, weight lifting instructor, and personal trainer. While at Rice she was able to serve as a bilingual liaison between the recreation center and the rest of the university and gave the Spanish-speaking community on campus access to wellness. She had a delightful time but very much missed the classroom during those three years. Since being back in action at EWS in 2019, Ashley teaches Spanish II, Spanish III, and Yoga and she is extremely happy about it. Before her first Emery stint, she was at the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas where she also taught Spanish. She is also an amateur oboist, piloting fanatic, and a credentialed Hufflepuff.
