Upper School Mathematics Teacher
Reports to: Head of Upper School

JOB SUMMARY:The Emery/Weiner School seeks a dynamic and innovative Mathematics teacher to join our collaborative faculty. Responsibilities for this position include teaching at least five sections of mathematics courses and serving as a homeroom Advisor. Additional responsibilities include participation in student life (e.g. club sponsorship), supervisory duties, and school trip chaperoning/facilitation according to the experience of the candidate and needs of the school.
The ideal applicant is an enthusiastic professional with a broad range of subject knowledge and previous high school teaching experience. A strong candidate will have a desire to teach in a progressive, student-centered independent school that values innovative approaches to instruction and experiential education. An outstanding candidate should be able to demonstrate a track record of innovation, flexibility, collegiality, and student success.
This position requires a professional who:
- Demonstrates mathematical knowledge and understanding across grade levels and content strands;
- Differentiates teaching and learning based on students’ cognitive needs;
- Independently and actively presents curriculum that balances content mastery, conceptual understanding, and the development of mathematical literacy;
- Develops creative formative and summative assessments and experiences to evaluate student learning;
- Employs innovative student-centered teaching practices rooted in brain-based research;
- Creates and scaffolds rigorous, higher-level thinking tasks that emphasize critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and problem-solving;
- Provides opportunities for student self-assessment and engagement in the learning process;
- Exhibits a passion to teach and learn from young people and colleagues.
Responsibilities include:
- Teaching upper school math classes to students with a range of academic aptitudes;
- Assessing students’ academic and social development;
- Providing consistent oral and written communication to students and families;
- Collaborative work on grade-level, department, and interdisciplinary faculty teams.
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in mathematics or related field;
- Comfort with innovative and forward-thinking approaches to instruction;
- A strong commitment to professional growth.
Preferred qualifications:
- Advanced degree in mathematics, education, or related field;
- 2-5 years of proven success in teaching upper school students;
- Experience implementing inquiry-based or project-based curriculum;
- Experience teaching in independent schools.
