Learning Support Specialist

Job Summary:
The Middle School Learning Support Specialist supports students with documented learning differences by providing intervention; supports teachers in their efforts to foster success for students with varied learning needs within the classroom; works with parents, students, and outside professionals to better support students.

Responsibilities:
 
  • Develops solid knowledge of the Curriculum Maps, Scope and Sequence and all other grade-level curriculum in each content area taught, including the essential information, concepts and skills to better support students and assist classroom teachers. 
  • Supports differentiated instruction as needed (in content, process, product, and environment). 
  • Reviews and interprets psychological and cognitive testing completed by private specialists. 
  • Develops strategies to meet the academic needs of identified students. 
  • In cooperation with classroom teacher(s), creates an individual accommodation plan for each student with a documented learning difference. 
  • Collaborates with teachers in classrooms to help enrich curricular approaches and improve pedagogy to better meet the needs of our students. 
  • Communicates with outside specialists attending to students’ needs. 
  • Seeks out new and innovative curricula, texts, and technological applications for implementation in our classroom. 
  • Remains current with accepted and appropriate instructional theory, best practice and the latest research. 
  • Establishes and maintains frequent communication with parents about their child’s academic progress and support needs. 
  • Attends meetings for all students receiving Learning Support. 
  • Attends and participates in weekly faculty meetings, committee meetings, school functions, and professional development activities during and after school hours as needed, appropriate and assigned.   
  • Adheres to strict student confidentiality. 
  • Participates in and/or chaperones some school activities, field trips, orientations, and experiential learning trips. 
  • Performs other tasks as deemed necessary and appropriate by the Division Head, the Academic Dean and/or the Head of School. 
  • Will teach Structured Study Skills classes 
 
 
Knowledge and Skills: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, Special Education, Diagnostics, or a similar field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in Special Education, Educational Diagnostics, Learning Support, Intervention or similar educational field in a school setting.
  • Knowledge of best practices related to providing academic support for students with learning differences.
  • Technology integration skills.
  • Strong relational, interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Time management and planning skills. 
 
Physical Skills and Abilities: 
  • This position frequently involves standing, walking, sitting, and manipulating (lifting, carrying, and moving) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds in the course of coordinating work. This position also frequently involves finger dexterity, talking, hearing and visual acuity, and may sometimes involve stooping, kneeling, and crouching in the course of coordinating work. 
 
Working Conditions: 
  • Instruction is performed in a normal science classroom setting.
  • Chaperoning trips may include outdoor, physical activities.
